ClimateXchange update

We’ve got enough funding to continue for the next year – a big thank you to our funders, which include Artists Project Earth, Fund for Environment and Urban Life and an anonymous trust. We’ll shortly be releasing our report from ClimateXchange phase 1, and are working on the plan for the next 12 months. Our main focus points will be supporting and enabling the community groups to continue and build up on their fine work, and eco-renovation.

IN THE NEWS

Arctic sea ice continues record seasonal decline.
Scientists monitoring sea ice extent in the Arctic are reporting that once again, sea ice is declining at increased rates. While the sea ice extent for May 2008 is a little above the extent for 2007, it is below the 20-year average, and the rate of decline this year is greater rate than in 2007. For more information and analysis, go to http://nsidc.org/arcticseaicenews/index.html.

Summertime…and the heating is easy…so lets get measuring with iMeasure!

Researchers at ECI have developed iMeasure so you can find out how your energy use varies over time, and they can research domestic carbon behaviour. We need to recruit 1,000 users to measure their electricity and gas in June. Eco-St have kindly offered £20 to spend on eco-goodies as an incentive – so please sign up at www.imeasure.org.uk .

NEW WEBSITES:

Scoodi, is a new Oxford based web start-up which brings web2.0 tools to the Freecycle crowd. The Scoodi website connects you with your neighbours and local community so that you can find a new home for all the stuff you don’t need any more. Content is presented in a clear and uncluttered style and, their “act-local technology” finds all the relevant content around where you live.

As a local Scoodi community grows, you will see a large list of stuff evolve. We like to call this “community inventory”. You get to use something for as long as you need it, then you put it back into circulation. It is a far more efficient way to use our natural resources. The items listed on Scoodi are like a community asset. The more stuff we list, the more people we help out and the less new stuff we have to make. Scoodi is provided as a free community service. www.scoodi.com/local/oxford
